- The Problem
Every year, tons of sargassum seaweed wash ashore along our coasts. Current methods for handling this natural waste—beach burial and landfill disposal—cause serious harm to marine ecosystems and the environment.
- HARMFUL:
Existing Excess Sargassum Disposal Methods
Negative Impacts:
- Concentrates arsenic in beach to levels above 4 ppm
- Releases hydrogen sulfide gas which affects beachgoers and nearby communities
- Breeding ground for fecal bacteria
- Increasing nitrogen runoff and coastal water pollution
- Requires diesel equipment that damages dunes and harms turtle nesting habitats
- BENEFICIAL:
The Solution — Recycle the Sargassum
Sargassum Recycling Process:
- Collect and transport to a dedicated recycling facility.
- Within 24 hours, removed sand, salt and debris.
- Sterilize pathogens.
- Chop and digest biomass.
- Prevent gas emission and capture CO² for reuse.
- Extract arsenic.
- Test and filter.
- Produce organic products.
