Stop Sargassum Beach Burial And Landfill-Recycle Instead
23 June 2026
The Problem
Every year, tons of sargassum seaweed wash ashore along our coasts. Current methods for handling this natural waste — beach burial and landfill disposal — cause serious harm to marine ecosystems and the environment.
HARMFUL:
Existing Excess Sargassum Disposal Methods
Negative impacts:
- Concentrates arsenic in beach levels above safe limits
- Releases hydrogen sulfide gas
- Breeding ground for fecal bacteria
- Increasing nitrogen runoff and coastal water pollution
- Requires diesel equipment that damages dunes
BENEFICIAL:
Sargassum Recycling Process:
- Collect and transport to a dedicated recycling facility
- Remove sand, salt, and debris within 24 hours
- Sterilize pathogens
- Chop and digest biomass
- Prevent gas emission and capture CO² for reuse
- Produce organic products
The Goal:
Clean Beaches
Healthy Communities
